In depth

Verdict

Pigeon Island can beat the older Deep Purple in what looks a two-horse race on paper. Pigeon Island failed to live up to his early promise on the Flat for Gerard Butler, but has certainly been going the right way over timber since Nigel Twiston-Davies decided to fit him with blinkers. The four-year-old fairly bolted up at Worcester to open his account, with Paddy Brennan on board for the first time, and the latter is sure to ride a lot more winners for his new stable. The decision to take in another novice hurdle rather than go handicapping is a wise one just now, and he should be capable of following up. Deep Purple is the stumbling block judged on his debut success over timber at Stratford, and this lightly-raced individual, successful on the Flat for Marcus Tregoning, may have found his true vocation so is another to follow. The concession of 8lb to the selection may be beyond him at present, although he should almost certainly prove better than Royale Rag and Naini Tai. We shall remain loyal to Pigeon Island.
