    Verdict

There could be some mileage to be gained with Quince, who edges a tentative vote over Great Hawk and Balanced Budget. There may also be more to come from Barodine, whose mark of 85 does not leave too much room for mistakes so will be going hell-for-leather today. The son of Barathea won his maiden well at Warwick and is entitled to take on this stiffer company. However, he was no match for Balanced Budget when they met at Pontefract and improvement is needed. Jeremy Noseda's charge, in turn, also needs to find a little more and, with the ground possibly going against him, it will take a good effort from Nicky Mackay's mount to prevail. Great Hawk wasn't given a hard time when he was introduced here in April. But he showed marked improvement to win at Haydock earlier in the month. His yard have been flying lately and another bold bid looks to be in the offering. However, a more sporting choice comes in the shape of Quince, whose latest effort at York suggests that he will have very few problems on the predicted going. The cheekpieces do make a difference during his races and, as he receives weight from all bar a couple of his rivals, the son the ultra-tough Fruits Of Love looks a cracking each-way option in a very tricky little handicap.
