Nonrunner
With no fewer than 36 runners set to face the starter, finding the winner will not be easy and while the likely favourite Darley Sun has solid claims after his narrow defeat in the Doncaster Cup it may pay to look elsewhere for a bit of value with the vote going to David Pipe's MAMLOOK, who gets the verdict ahead of another runner form a yard better known for their success with jumpers, Fair Along (Philip Hobbs). The selection is only 4lbs higher than when third behind Caracciola in this event 12 months ago in what was his latest start on the level but the five-year-old has run creditably back over hurdles since then and the yard will undoubtedly have him ready for this. Stable companion Raslan is not without a chance but more solid claims are probably held by Mark Johnston's Yes Mr President, who has shown a consistent level of form of late and was good value for his win at Haydock last month. Johnston is also represented by Keenes Day and Alanbrooke, both of whom have to be respected with the latter having run well in the Cesarewitch Trial here last month. Electrolyser won well in a Listed race at Ascot last month but a 4lb penalty for that success leaves him with more to do now, while other runners with penalties Nanton, Callisto Moon and Dayia are also likely to have to settle for minor honours today. John Dunlop's Swingkeel has been running consistently well and is closely matched with Electrolyser on running last time. He has to be respected and makes more appeal than Sweetheart, who stays well but is probably too high in the weights at present. Bryan Smart's Wells Lyrical is better than he showed over an inadequate trip at Ayr on his most recent start and should be suited by the step up to this distance as he stays really well, while Bahrain Storm could be of interest if he stays but is not certain to do so. Fair Along is probably too high in the weights over hurdles now but remains feasibly well treated on the flat and represents Philip Hobbs, who does well with his runners on the level so he has to be considered on his reappearance but preference is for Mamlook.
