In depth

Verdict

A distinctly moderate handicap and what can only be a tentative vote goes to Garnock Venture, who is preferred to Saros and Aguilera. The last mentioned comes from the stable of Michael Dods that has been in good form in recent weeks but she needs to improve on recent form in maidens in this first venture into a handicap. Themesofgreen, St Tropez and Luke Sharp are others to make their debuts in handicap-company today but none of the trio look to be particularly well treated, although none would need to improve greatly to trouble the judge. More obvious claims are held by Bryan Smart's dual Banded stakes winner Saros, who makes his return to the turf here. He has yet to prove his effectiveness on grass though and is probably best watched. Jeremy Glover's recent selling third Killoch Place and Paul Blockley's unexposed Venerdi Tredici are others worthy of a mention but the vote goes to Garnock Venture. Alan Berry has his string in good form at present and while the three-year-old disappointed at Newcastle last week, the soft ground would have been against him there. Back on a more suitable surface, he looks worth another chance in a poor race.
