Verdict

A competitive contest in which very few can be easily dismissed. Topweight Montecassino Abbey has gone up 6lbs for his half length success over Lygeton Lad last month but meets Gay Kelleway's horse on the same terms as the son of Shaamit has run respectably on three occasions since. The best handicapped horse in the race is arguably Dower House but Andrew Turnell's eight-year-old is on the downslide and is difficult to recommend. Despite opening his account in a Wolverhampton maiden last time the David Evans-trained Gallant Boy has been dropped 2lbs by the handicapper. He has to be respected, especially if taking to the surface. The booking of Eddie Ahern, who rides this track better than most, takes the eye on Simon Dow's Dennis Our Menace. Choto Mate and Topton both have absences to overcome and may just be in need of the outing.
