Verdict

The Hairy Lemon is well-handicapped now but recent performances have been like those of a sulky teenager and a safer bet is POP AHEAD who has been progressing well and is taken to see off Nemetan and Le Burf. Jonjo O'Neill's gelding comes here on the back of two wins and he has a good chance, although a whopping 16lb rise in the weights makes life tough. He acts at the track (winner here last time), and has no problem on good or softer ground. He has a tendency to jump right which isn't a problem around here and he looks the obvious starting point. Nemetan is admirable over both sets of obstacles but he now looks high enough in the weights, so of more interest could be Kew Jumper assuming that the ground stays good. Ice Bucket represents a trainer in good form but he was in poor form when seen last year. However a chink of light appears as he is best going this way round and he is now back to a workable mark. Le Burf was an impressive winner last time out at Wincanton and he seemed to appreciate that easy track. He has an 8lb rise in the weights to contend with today and he is still fairly unexposed as a chaser. Soulard is consistent but more was expected of John Spearing's gelding and this is likely to be the most testing ground he has faced; he appears to need it like a road to be at his best. A back to form Launde would be of interest, but he was poor last time at Cheltenham and a more obvious bet is the in-form Pop Ahead.
