In depth

Verdict

This is not the strongest race of this nature to have ever been staged at Kelso and it looks to be a good opportunity for French import Maldoun to get off the mark for the Martin Pipe team. The four-year-old ran multiple Group race winner Morzov to a length on the Flat in his homeland, but his subsequent efforts indicated that he was in need of a sterner test of stamina. He put in a respectable effort on his debut for the champion trainer at Hereford a little over a week ago, and need only run up to that level to have the majority of these in trouble. Crunchy is capable of giving the selection a run for the money, but any further rain will take the edge of his chance. However, he had plenty to spare over Vidi Caesar when the pair met at Catterick, so is a confident choice for the forecast. Skenfrith went well on both his previous starts here and is taken as best of the rest of those with each way chances.
