In depth

Verdict

This unique event can go to Flying Spirit, who goes very well here and can gain compensation for his narrow defeat in last month's Amateur riders Derby. Maystock is reliable and along with Smart John, is expected to pose a few problems along the way. Papeete and Chocolate Boy are others to throw into the mix for each-way punters and should also ensure a good pace unfolds. That scenario will also suit Pay The Silver, who is capable on his day and can be expected to arrive late on the scene. However, he often leaves himself with to much to do and looks risky for win only purposes. Smart John is useful at this level and has shaped as if his turn is not too far away. However, recent efforts suggest that he has a bit to find with the selection and he needs to pull some thing out of the fire. Maystock has returned to something like her best in the last couple of months and will be hard to shake off if she runs her usual race. However, Epsom really does bring the best out of Flying Spirit and, as he looks the pick of Garry Moore's two entries, this previous course and distance winner is fancied to give his rider the ideal passage in a rare outing on the flat.
