In depth

Verdict

The final big handicap of the Turf Flat season can go to Mith Hill ahead of the likes of Tempsford, Turbo, Tip The Dip and Carte Diamond to name but a few. Many will want to be on Tempsford here, given his trainer's skill at lining one up for a tilt, but at the likely odds, Sir Mark Prescott's charge is worth taking on. Granted he does go well on soft ground and has won here in the past, but the handicap in which he beat Millville and Bendarshaan has not thrown up the winner of today's contest for many a year. Ed Dunlop is ending the season on a high thanks to Ouija Board and in Mith Hill has just the sort to win this. He is lightly weighted, comes from the right age-group, lines up in top form and is nicely drawn in stall 15 as only two winners since 1990 have been housed in single figures. There will not be a dry eye in the house if Turbo repeats last year's victory for soon to be retired Toby Balding, and he limbered up with an eye catching second at Newbury recently. John Gosden has won this end of season puzzle three times and saddles Shredded and Tip The Dip, with preference for the latter. With just the three outings this term, his powder has been kept well and truly dry, and he will have no problems with the ground. Carte Diamond was a neck second in Listed company at Newmarket in September but might just be too high in the weights, while his stablemate Artistic Style has topweight to overcome. Go Tech has been in great form but may have nothing left in the tank, while Tim Easterby's other runner Jeepstar will find this a lot more competitive than he is used to. The list is endless in truth, but with ticks in all the right places, Mith Hill who has just scraped in to the line-up, gets our vote.
