Verdict

HARZAND bids to become the 18th to complete the Epsom/Curragh Derby double and there doesn't appear any reason to doubt his ability to do so. Dermot Weld's charge, who beat Idaho one and a half lengths in the Ballysax, with Moonlight Magic well behind, and had Aidan O'Brien's colt slightly further back in third at Epsom, wouldn't want the ground to quicken up but he travelled well in the big one and had the tenacity to fight off US Army Ranger. Idaho is a long-striding type who probably wasn't entirely suited to Epsom though he had every chance. He's the obvious main threat as Red Verdon, who has been supplemented for this, Moonlight Magic, Port Douglas and Shogun were all well beaten in the classic. The remainder have mountains to climb with the huge prize money down to sixth place having attracted some moderate performers.
