Verdict

The feature event of day two and the unexposed Pampas Cat is taken to overcome inexperience to land the first of three derby trials this week. Pampas Cat is ironically without an Epsom entry and was sent off an unconsidered 20-1 shot in a 10f Newmarket maiden which consisted of a full field of newcomers but there was a lot to like about the professional manner in which he went about his job. Many of those behind are highly regarded with big race entries, among those Checklow who recently landed a maiden at short odds. John Gosden admitted to been surprised with the 103 rating allotted to Pampas Cat suggesting the horse could be a good deal better than he thinks but today will tell the story. Dangers include Doctor Fremantle, Feared In Flight and the Aidan O'Brien pair of Vivaldi and Wassily Kadinsky with jockey bookings suggesting the former is the better fancied of that pairing. Doctor Fremantle comes here after been turned over at short odds in a 3yr old handicap over 10f last time. Well supported into short priced favouritism, connections obviously were expecting him to do the business of what appeared a lenient handicap mark. It is significant they have decided to take the jump into pattern company and a bold run can be expected. Feared In Flights' level of form is not as unpredictable as he had five outings as a juvenile, the fifth been a fine third in the Racing Post Trophy. He made his seasonal return in Sandown's Derby Trial, a renewal that did not look anything special. It did prove though that he had trained on after a tough juvenile campaign however, he does not appear to have as much potential as some of today¿s rivals. Vivaldi did not appear among the usual talking horses to emerge from Ballydoyle pre-season and his Gowran maiden form does not amount to much. Market support would be significant as he is bred to improve with age while Wassily Kadinsky would appear to have it all to do on juvenile form. Pampas Cat impressed many at Newmarket and is taken to land the Chester Vase before going on to better things.
