In depth

Verdict

Seldom will a worse maiden have been seen and the predicted match between Quite Sparky and OFFSPRING can be won by the latter. Tim Easterby's filly ran in what has turned out to be a hot maiden on debut before being dropped in trip. Last time she took third at Redcar, shaping as though she'd improve when returned to further which is backed up by her pedigree. Whilst that race was by no means strong this looks easier and she should only need to beat Quite Sparky to score. Officially, Tom Tate's runner is 13lbs better than our pick and were it not for a major disappointment last time he'd have been hard to oppose here. However, he was laboured at best over a mile at Redcar and the quick ground here may be against him; he hung as if not in love with the surface last time having previously shown good form on ground with cut. If he copes he may win, but that 'if' is a big one and we'll take him on. Barren Brook ran in a better maiden than this last time and shaped reasonably but dropping back to seven furlongs doesn't appeal as likely to suit, Octaviana has 25 lengths to find with a below-par Quite Sparky on their meeting at Redcar and Hairy Maclary will surely be seen in a better light when sent handicapping over further in time. Spread Boy is a cheap purchase who wouldn't normally make any appeal but such is the lack of strength in this contest that he has to be checked for support, but Quite Sparky and Offspring should dominate here with preference for the latter.
