The frustrating Jan Smuts was only beaten a head by Aleksandar at Musselburgh last month and finished ahead of Exclusive Contract at Newcastle subsequently but will probably find at least one too good again. Stanarley Pic still hasn't proved he stays this far but Di's Gift won over 2m here last time and Russian Royale and Miss Macnamara have been in decent form over hurdles this summer. The latter finished behind CALCULATED RISK at Chester last month, however, and John Quinn's formerly useful jumper is starting to look very well treated on the Flat nowadays. This represents a drop in class and he can get the better of Hickster, who ran very well over 1m4f at Leicester behind the in-form English Summer when racing from out of the handicap.
