In depth

Verdict

Double Vodka, Border Reiver and Fortysecond Street can all go well here, but this can be the day for THE PANAMA KID to come good. Malcolm Jefferson's five-year-old tends to take a few races to come to hand, and while his first two starts over fences were nothing to write home about if taken in isolation, he has been building up some invaluable chase experience. He jumps well enough and also acts on soft ground, but the key here is the step up in trip and that can allow him to show his hand in successful fashion. Fortysecond Street represents powerful connections and has won two of his four career starts. This is his chasing debut, and he wont mind the trip at all, but while he did finish runner-up on soft ground over hurdles, he is better on a sound surface and looks worth taking on. Sue Smith's Stagecoach Pearl has a course win to his name and acts on good to soft, though if it is any deeper than that this fencing newcomer might not get home. Double Vodka made a pleasing debut here on similar going around a year ago, but he has been off the track since. His ability suggests that he can go close here, although he has never yet won when fresh, so he will have that to put to rights to be victorious. Border Reiver appears to go on any ground, but he was well beaten on his chasing debut at Newcastle and in spite of the Easterby yard's good recent form he needs to improve. Little else makes significant appeal on form or pedigree, and we will side with The Panama Kid.
