Balthazar King is recovering at the University of Liverpool Equine Hospital in Liverpool after suffering suspected broken ribs when falling in the Crabbie's Grand National.

Runner-up in the Aintree spectacular 12 months ago, Richard Johnson's mount had only made it as far as the Canal Turn on Saturday (eighth fence) when he came to grief and brought down Ballycasey.

The 11-year-old was treated on the course before being transferred to Leahurst by horse ambulance.

Balthazar King's trainer, Philip Hobbs, said on Sunday morning: "He's in the equine hospital in Liverpool and was comfortable last night.

"They think he's probably broken some ribs. Hopefully he'll be okay."
