The scout reports...

We check on one of the most in-demand young strikers in South America in the shape of Paraguay's Mauro Caballero. Caballero is the son of former international striker of the same name, and it was little surprise he showed a love for football at the age of eight. By the time he was 11, he was snapped up by one of his father's former clubs Olimpia, but within two years he was moved on to join Libertad. It took Caballero little time to make an impact at the club, scoring a host of goals at youth level - something which won him call-ups to the national team. Indeed in 2009 he finished as second top-scorer to Brazil's Lucas Piazon (now at Chelsea) at the South American Under-15 Championship. He repeated that feat in 2011 finishing as second top-scorer in the Under-17 event. His performances in 2011 helped press his claims for a first-team call-up with Libertad and despite being just 16 he was called into the first team by coach Gregorio Perez. Caballero has since become a key figure in their squad and already has 20 first-team appearances under his belt. Caballero is very much a forward, but he has played in numerous roles for Libertad already as he continues to make his name. However, Caballero is at home in the box - he is a goalscorer and surprisingly very good in the air, indeed it would be very easy to compare him to Mexico's Javier Hernandez. It is therefore little surprise that he already has some of Europe's elite chasing him. Benfica and Porto are reported to be leading the chase for his coveted signature - but Chelsea, Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all believed to have scouted him closely in recent months.

The scout says...

Already touted as one of the gems of Paraguayan football, expectation level is high that Caballero can emerge as one of their finest talents of recent times. Libertad are hoping to keep him for a while longer, but a move to Europe looks more than likely in the next 12 months - then it will be whether the obviously talented young player can cope with the transition, if he is to fulfil his undoubted potential.
