Britain's Johanna Konta caused another upset at the Aegon International at Eastbourne by claiming a gritty win over world No 20 Garbine Muguruza to progress to the quarter-finals.
The 24-year-old, in the tournament on a wild card, removed world No 8 Ekaterina Makarova on Tuesday and followed up that scalp with a 6-4 4-6 6-3 defeat of 14th seed Muguruza at Devonshire Park for her third consecutive victory over a top-40-ranked player in the tournament.
"To be honest I’m just happy that I’m still in the tournament, I’m just really happy that I was able to stay tough because she (Muguruza) really started picking up her level and I thought she was going to run away with a little," Konta told Eurosport after the match.
"We haven't changed much, I think it’s to do with my belief in my shots and I think that has improved a lot."
Australia-born Konta is ranked 146th in the world and has been handed a wild card into Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.
She will play Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals after her opponent Eugenie Bouchard retired hurt in their match, with the 18-year-old was leading the Canadian 6-4 3-0 at the time.
