Stefan Kozlov became the youngest player ever to play in the Valencia Open but bowed out in the first round after being beaten 6-3 6-3 by Martin Klizan.

The 16-year-old American was given a wildcard entry into the tournament, the first time he has ever played in an ATP 500 level event.

But he was no match for world No 37 Klizan, who did drop serve once but came through to wrap up the win in an hour and 22 minutes.

Meanwhile, Marcel Granollers' bid for a second title in Valencia ended abruptly as he was forced to pull out of the event through injury midway through his first-round match.

Facing Spanish compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta, the world No 48 who won the tournament in 2011, Granollers was trailing 6-2 3-1 when a leg problem brought the match to an early conclusion.

Carreno Busta will now take on either fourth seed Feliciano Lopez or Slovakian qualifier Norbert Gombos, who meet each other on Tuesday.

Yen-Hsun Lu advanced to round two in straight sets with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and will next face either John Isner or Tommy Robredo.

The top three seeds are not in action until Wednesday, with No 1 David Ferrer up against Andreas Seppi and second seed Tomas Berdych taking on Pablo Andujar.

Third seed Andy Murray, fresh from his win in the Erste Bank Open in Vienna at the weekend, faces Austria's Jurgen Melzer in his opening match.

The Valencia tournament is crucial for all three men in their bid to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.
