Andy Murray came back from a set down to defeat Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 6-2 in the first round of the China Open.

The British No 1, who last week won his first tournament since his 2013 Wimbledon triumph, lost his first three service games but eventually fought back to take the win after 2 hours 28 minutes.

Murray will play Pablo Cuevas in round two after the Uruguayan clinched a 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-4 win against Mikhail Kukushkin.

Murray started the match in the worst possible fashion as he was broken by Janowicz in the first game before the Pole held serve to claim a 2-0 lead.

Janowicz broke again in the next game, and while Murray broke back immediately he was unable to hold his serve for the third consecutive game and slumped to a 4-1 deficit.

Janowicz moved 5-1 ahead before Murray hit back, winning five games in a row to edge ahead at 6-5.

Janowicz then served to love to take the first set to a tie-break, which was hotly contested with the duo matching each other all the way until the Pole found a way through to win 11-9.
