Fifth seed Julia Goerges came through a tight tussle against Andrea Hlavackova to reach the semi-finals of the Coupe Banque Nationale in Quebec.

Goerges, who is seeking her first WTA title since winning in Stuttgart three years ago, came through against the 193rd-ranked Czech 6-7(6) 7-5 6-2 on the indoor courts despite losing the opening set tiebreak.

The 25-year-old German equalled her best performance of the season by reaching the last four of a major tournament. She also made the semi-finals in Pattaya City earlier this  year.

Next up for Goerges is a clash against Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni after she made light work of Kazakstan's 195th-ranked Sesil Karatantcheva 7-5 6-0.

Top seed Venus Williams, a seven-time grand slam singles champion, defeated Czech hopeful Lucie Hradecka 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-3) in two hours and 10 minutes.

Williams, 34, is ranked 19th and comes off a third-round exit at the US Open. She is seeking her 46th career WTA crown and second of the year after winning in Dubai.
