Aegon Championships: Marinko Matosevic knocks out 2011 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Marinko Matosevic powered past 2011 finalist and No 5 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Aegon Championships to reach the quarter-finals.

The outspoken Australian has come under fire all week for admitting he would never hire a female coach, conceding "I don't think that highly of the women's game".

The 28-year-old world No 60 brushed past Tsonga 6-2 6-4 in Kensington though, adding another scalp after beating ninth-seed Marin Cilic in the first round.

Matosevic will now face top seed Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals on Friday, after the Swiss world No 3 eased past American Sam Querrey in straight sets.

Matosevic questioned the standard of women's tennis on Tuesday when asked about Andy Murray's decision to appoint Amelie Mauresmo as his coach.

The Melbourne-based player suffered a social media backlash against his comments, with compatriot Sam Stosur labelling him "pig-headed".

The unfazed right-hander, coached by Mark Woodforde, stood by his comments after defeating Lukas Lacko on Wednesday - and remained entirely unruffled against Tsonga.

Berdych and Lopez through

Tomas Berdych battled his way into the quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over Adrian Mannarino.

The 28-year-old Czech second seed slugged past the French world No 83 in a lengthy two sets, 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 to set up a last-eight clash with world No 28 Feliciano Lopez.

World No six Berdych had needed three sets to see off Australian James Duckworth in the second round, 7-6 (7/3) 5-7 6-4, on Tuesday.

Lopez narrowly avoided a big upset by fending off Frenchman Kenny De Schepper in three tie-break sets.

The 10th seed prevailed 7-6 (7/3) 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (7/3) to progress to the quarter-finals - but was pushed right to the limit by De Schepper, the world No 62.

De Schepper was unable to repeat his second-round giant-killing feat that accounted for sixth seed Ernests Gulbis.

Bulgarian fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 and will next face Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov, who advanced when Jarkko Nieminen retired in the second set.
