Heather Watson continued her excellent recent form by winning her opening match during pre-qualifying for the French Open.

Watson, who returned to the top 100 in the world rankings on Monday after winning an ITF title in Prague, beat American Irina Falconi 6-2 6-4 on the clay in Paris.

The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday but had to be delayed 24 hours due to heavy rain in the French capital.

Watson, the world No 92, needed just 94 minutes to beat a player some 52 places below her in the ranking list.

The 22-year-old from Guernsey finished the tie strongly by winning the last four games, after slipping 2-4 behind in the second set.

However, due to wet weather earlier in the week, she will now have to win two matches on Friday to make it into the main draw at Roland Garros.

Meanwhile, Johanna Konta is now just one win away from making it through to the main draw after she recorded a 6-4 2-6 6-3 victory over Paula Kania in the second round of qualifying.
