Rafa Nadal opened his account at the ATP World Tour Finals in London with a comprehensive 6-3 6-2 victory over David Ferrer.

An early break of serve set the tone and although Nadal's fellow Spaniard showed initial resistance the world No 1 simply dominated as he wrapped up victory in 74 minutes.

The pair exchanged breaks at the outset but Ferrer - who won their match in the Paris Masters semi-finals last week - was put under constant pressure on his serve and Nadal broke again to lead 3-2 when a forehand went wide.

And Nadal was unrelenting on his own delivery, winning nine out of 10 first serve points to provide the platform to boss his opponent round the court and move to set point with a forehand on the run, closing it out at the first opportunity.

Nadal then came out even more determined in the second set and broke Ferrer in the second game, and although he was taken to deuce further errors from Ferrer saw him move further ahead.

A superb forehand winner set up another break point and when a backhand flashed past him Ferrer was down a set and a double break.

Nadal made it 5-0 and appeared to be on the way to a facile win but Ferrer, seemingly with nothing to lose, opened his shoulders and held comfortably before getting a break back to give his fans forlorn hope.

But that's all it was, as although a rejuvenated Ferrer moved up 30-0 in the next, a double-fault allowed Nadal back in and and while the first match point was saved, Nadal clinched the inevitable win when his opponent netted a forehand.

The triumph puts Nadal top of Group A after Stanislas Wawrinka beat Tomas Berdych in three sets on Monday.
