Wimbledon finalist out of US Open after shock defeat to Italian

Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska was sent crashing out of the US Open in the fourth round after a 6-1 6-4 defeat to Roberta Vinci. The Wimbledon finalist was well below her best from the start and although she came back into it during the second set, the scoreline did not flatter the 20th-seeded Italian. Vinci is enjoying the best season of her career and reached the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time at Wimbledon two months ago, before bettering that landmark at Flushing Meadows. The 29-year-old, who had never beaten Radwanska before, was delighted to claim the prize scalp of the Pole. "I lost four times against her but today I played an unbelievable match. At the end it was like I was playing with my eyes closed. It was unbelievable," Vinci said.

Errani wins

In the quarter-finals she will play fellow Italian Sara Errani, with whom she won the doubles at the French Open, after the 10th seed claimed a 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 win over Angelique Kerber. Vinci added: "For sure an Italian goes to the semi-finals so I'm happy to play Sara. She's my best friend. I'm so pleased she won today." Errani is also enjoying the season of her life, having never been beyond the third round at a grand slam before reaching the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in January before following that up by reaching the final at Roland Garros. This was Errani's first appearance in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows and she went in as the underdog but came out on top against last year's semi-finalist. Germany's Kerber fought back from 3-0 down to level at 3-3 in the second set but it was Errani who proved the more reliable in the end.
