David Ferrer has withdrawn from Spain's team for the Davis Cup clash with Russia with an elbow injury.

The world No 7, who did not play at Wimbledon because of the same problem, initially made himself available to Spain's new captain Conchita Martinez for the the July 17-19 tie in Vladivostok.

His place in the team has been taken by Tommy Robredo, who had originally not been included in a five-man travelling party.

Ferrer confirmed on Twitter on Friday that he would not be making the long trip after undergoing medical tests with his physio and Spain's team doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro.

"I don't know when I will be able to return to action," Ferrer wrote. "I will keep you posted."

Spain need to beat the Russians to have a chance of moving back into the World Group, but they will be without Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez as well as Ferrer.

Martinez announced a five-man team on Tuesday, which also includes Pablo Andujar, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Marc Lopez and David Marrero.
