The UAE Royals endured a tense 23-21 defeat against Singapore Slammers which ended the Dubai side’s hopes of winning the International Premier Tennis League.

Victory would have extended the race for top spot into the final day, but Tomas Berdych secured the overall victory for the Slammers after a final set shootout with Novak Djokovic.

Tied at 7-7 with the world No 1, Berdych held his nerve and snatched the crucial final point for a 6-5 victory.

Earlier in the match, Daniela Hantuchova had made a flying start for Singapore after completing a 6-1 win over an out-of-sorts Caroline Wozniacki.

But the Royals hit back in the ‘legends’ encounter as Goran Ivanisevic defeated Patrick Rafter by the same margin.

In the mixed doubles, Nemad Zimonjic and Kristina Mladenovic claimed a 6-4 win to open up a lead for UAE.

But Australian duo Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kyrgios took a 6-3 triumph in the men’s doubles to set-up the thrilling singles clash.
