Davis Cup final: Roger Federer passed fit for Switzerland

Roger Federer has been passed fit to play for Switzerland in this week's Davis Cup final against France in Lille.

The Swiss Tennis Federation has confirmed the world No 2 will take on Gael Monfils in Friday's second singles rubber, with Stanislas Wawrinka facing Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the opening match.

Federer had been a huge doubt for the clash after he was forced to pull out of the ATP World Tour final at the O2 last weekend.

After edging past Wawrinka in a thrilling three-set semi-final, Federer aggravated a back problem which left him unable to contest the final against world No 1 Novak Djokovic.

But the 17-time major champion has been passed fit by Swiss medical staff following a practice session at the Pierre Mauroy stadium on Thursday.

"Things have been going well out there this morning. I was really happy with the way I felt," said Federer, although he would not be drawn on questions over his level of fitness.

"Only the match gives you the answer," he added. "I'm just pleased that I can play tomorrow, give it a go. Things have been going well."

France captain Arnaud Clement admitted he fully expected Federer to play, adding: "It is not a surprise for us, we prepared ourselves to play against Roger and Stan.

And Monfils, who has never beaten Federer in five previous encounters on clay, said: "He's had three days to rest and before that he played his best tennis in London so it's all good for him.

Switzerland captain Severin Luthi has selected Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer to play in Saturday's doubles encounter against Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet.

Federer is then scheduled to face Tsonga in the opening match of Sunday's reverse singles matches, with Wawrinka taking on Monfils in what could be the decider.
