Third seed Stanislas Wawrinka was shocked in the first round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Tuesday.

The Australian Open champion and home favourite went down 4-6 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 to Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan.

But there were no such problems for fourth seed Milos Raonic, who beat US player Steve Johnson 7-6 (7-4) 6-4, saving all five break points he faced in the match.

The Canadian, who hit 12 aces, then broke Johnson's serve for the first time in the 10th game of the second set to win through to the next round, where he faces another American, Donald Young.

Ivo Karlovic, the eighth seed, was also taken to a tie-break in the first set before winning through 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 against Lukas Rosol.

The Croatian hit 23 aces as he powered his way to the win and next faces French player Kenny de Schepper, who overcame Argentina’s Federico Delbonis 7-6 (7/3) 7-5.
