Seventh seed Jerzy Janowicz saw off the spirited challenge of Adrian Mannarino to reach the second round of the Moselle Open in Metz.

World No 76 Mannarino raced to a first set victory before forcing a tie-break in the second, but Poland's Janowicz bounced back to claim a 2-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 win over the Frenchman after two hours of play.

Meanwhile, Janowicz's Polish compatriot Michal Przysiezny defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert to set up an encounter with second seed Gael Monfils in the last 16.

Przysiezny overcame 16 aces and two break points to claim a 6-4 3-6 7-6 (9/7) victory; his first tour-level win since the Australian Open in January.

Also on Tuesday, Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands progressed after Italian Andreas Seppi was forced to retire due to a back injury, with the world No 48 trailing 6-0 4-1.

Wildcard Laurent Lokoli fell 6-2 6-4 to Italian Paolo Lorenzi, who will next face third seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, while qualifier Kenny De Schepper became the fourth Frenchman to lose on the day, beaten 6-3 7-6 (7/5) by German Tobias Kamke.
