Gilles Simon is a major doubt for the Australian Open after he damaged his ankle at the Kooyong exhibition tournament.

Simon, the 18th seed, is due to face Daniel Brands in the opening round in Melbourne.

However the 29-year-old faces a race against time to be fit after he rolled his right ankle during his Kooyong semi-final clash against Richard Gasquet.

Simon was trailing his compatriot 7-6 (7-3) 1-0 when he collapsed in pain when chasing a ball at the net.

And despite receiving treatment from the tournament physiotherapist Simon was unable to carry on, with the Frenchman having to be helped from the court.
