Serena Williams: Was forced to dig deep against Maria Kirilenko
World No 1 Serena Williams is through to the quarter-finals of the China Open after a battling performance against Maria Kirilenko.
Williams was forced to dig deep to quell the aggressive approach of Kirilenko, with the American eventually prevailing 7-5 7-5.
But Kirilenko was left to rue missed chances, after having had three set points in the first set and then breaking Williams to lead 4-3 in the second.
"I just thought, what else can I do except fight for this point and the next point'," Williams said.
"Maybe I got lucky a little bit I just started to relax and kind of swing and not think about it too much out there. I'm obviously just really happy to get through this match today."
Williams will now face either Sloane Stephens or Caroline Wozniacki in the last eight at Beijing's National Tennis Centre.
Eighth seed Jelana Jankovic had no such troubles in reaching the next round, with the Serb ruthlessly disposing of 12th-ranked Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0 6-0.
Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska dropped just two games on to a 6-0 6-2 rout of Polona Hercog, while Angelique Kerber, the No 7 seed, also eased her way to a straight-sets win, with the German overcoming the 10th-seeded Roberta Vinci 6-2 6-4.
Lucie Safarova was taken to the wire by Andrea Petkovic before claiming a 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-1) win.
