Fabio Fognini saved three match points en route to winning the German Open in Hamburg and claim his second ATP Tour title in eight days.

The Italian, who triumphed in Stuttgart last week, beat qualifier Federico Delbonis 4-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-2 in two hours and 28 minutes to extend his winning run to 10 matches.

Yet the No 12 seed was on the brink of defeat when his Argentinian opponent held three separate match points in the second set tie-break.

Fognini had also earlier recovered from 1-4 down in the second set before breaking serve three times in the decider to end the challenge of the world No 114.

Fognini admitted: "At the end, there was a bit of luck involved. At times, Federico was really strong.

"It's an amazing week. I can't believe it right now. I just feel incredible, a real good sensation. I'm very happy. I was, I think, a little bit lucky. I was nervous.

"Today I didn't play really good, but I fought hard. I think that was the key. Another trophy, that's the important thing."

Last week's win in Stuttgart was his first career title and was also on clay.

As for Delbonis, his excellent week ended in disappointment following his remarkable semi-final success over Roger Federer on Saturday.

Fognini has 25 wins on clay this season, second only to Rafael Nadal's 38 while Delbonis was reaching his first career final.

"To lose the final with match points is disappointing," said Delbonis. "But at the end of the week, the result of all the week is positive for me. It's my first final and I beat Roger yesterday."
