Radek Stepanek made it safely through to the second round of the Apia International Sydney after a 6-2 6-3 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The sixth seed needed one hour and 13 minutes to complete the victory in sweltering conditions and set up a second-round clash with Julien Benneteau.

Bernard Tomic also progressed to the second round after winning his all-Australian clash with Marinko Matosevic 6-3 6-4.

Australian Wildcard John Millman gave the home crowd more reason to cheer as he saw off experienced Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3 6-4 in the first round.

The searing heat sweeping Australia has hogged many of the headlines in recent weeks but Millman says he was not as affected as some by the high temperatures.

"We've played in them every day since we were six years old or whatever," he told the ATP Tour's official website.

Seventh seed Jeremy Chardy was the most notable casualty on Tuesday as Feliciano Lopez beat him 6-7 (2-7) 7-5 6-3.
