Ferrer sees defending champions into Davis Cup final
Spain are still on track for a successful defence of their Davis Cup title after securing a place in the final by taking an unassailable 3-1 lead against the United States.
David Ferrer fought back from a set down to claim a 6-7 (3/7) 6-3 6-4 6-2 beat John Isner in the first of the singles rubbers on Sunday to wrap-up the semi-final contest.
The towering American used his trademark serve to good effect in the first set as he edged ahead after taking the tie-break, but Ferrer dominated from thereon.
The US Open semi-finalist eventually managed to tame Isner's serve, with his precise returns and passing shots seeing him take control.
The Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, had kept the tie alive for the United States, with victory in the doubles on Saturday but Ferrer's 16th straight Davis Cup win on clay sealed their fate.
Berdych seals Czech win
Spain will play the Czech Republic in the final after Tomas Berdych saw off Argentina's Carlos Berlocq in the reverse singles on the Buenos Aires clay.
World number six Berdych prevailed 6-3 6-3 6-4 against Berlocq, ranked 39 places lower, to hand the Czechs a 3-1 lead.
Berlocq was pressed into duty in place of Argentina's top-ranked player, world number eight Juan Martin del Potro, who had beaten Radel Stepanek in the singles opener on Friday but was unable to return to the court on Sunday due to the wrist injury he aggravated at the US Open.
Berdych will hope to emulate Ivan Lendl's team which lifted the Davis Cup in 1980 as Czechoslovakia.
