Watson makes French Open draw but Robson falls short

Heather Watson stormed into the main draw of the French Open but Laura Robson missed out in qualifying on Friday. British number three Watson thrashed Italy's Anna Floris 6-0 6-1 in less than an hour at Roland Garros to book her place in the tournament proper. The 20-year-old, whose year has been disrupted by niggling injuries, reeled off the first nine games and then sealed victory with an ace. It is the second year in a row Watson has come through qualifying at the claycourt Grand Slam. Twelve months ago she became the first British woman to win a main draw match since Clare Wood in 1994. She joins compatriots Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong in the main event this time around. The Guernsey star said: "I love Paris and I love playing on the clay, it is perfect for me. "These past few days have been good, I have been on form, playing very well in practice and I just want to take that into the matches. I have done. "This morning I wasn't feeling my best, feeling a bit nervous about getting through, but I ended up playing one of the best matches I could have played. "I really don't mind who I play in the first round, I shall go out with the same attitude, no matter who it is.'' She later found out her opponent would be Russia's Elena Vesnina, the world number 80. Robson had hoped to make it four Britons in the women's singles but blew two match points in losing to higher-ranked Czech Karolina Pliskova. The teenager led had two chances to wrap up the win at 6-4 5-4 and 40-15 but ended up losing 4-6 7-5 6-4 in what was a rematch of the pair's 2010 Australian Open girls' final.
