Teenager fails to join Watson and Robson in the second round

Stephanie Cornish failed to make it a trio of Brits in the second round of the US Open girls' singles after a heartbreaking exit. The Essex teenager, ranked third in the British under-18 girls rankings behind Heather Watson and Laura Robson, was knocked out by Russia's Yana Buchina 6-4 7-6 (11-9). Cornish, though, did make amends for the defeat by teaming up with Canada's Katarena Pallivets to beat Russia's Polina Leykina and Anna Arina Marenko 6-1 7-5 in the girls' doubles. Robson resumes her singles campaign on Tuesday when the 2008 junior Wimbledon champion takes on seventh seed Lauren Embree. British No.1 Watson, seeded 11th, will take on either Cristina Dinu of Romania or American qualifier Courtney Dolehide in her second round match. In the boys' doubles first round, Leicestershire's Ahmed El Menshawy and American Harry Fowler beat Slovak duo Filip Horansky and Jozef Kovalik 7-5 6-3.
