Roger Federer could set up a possible blockbuster semi-final against Rafael Nadal at the Rome Masters when he takes on Tomas Berdych on Court Centrale on Friday.

The Swiss world No 2 survived a late fightback by Kevin Anderson on Thursday to book his place in the quarter-finals and a showdown against the Czech player.

Berdych, a runner-up in the Monte Carlo final to Novak Djokovic, will be expected to give the 17-time Grand Slam champion a testing encounter after ending Fabio Fognini's run on his home dirt.
