Laura Robson looks set to miss this month’s Australian Open after failing to recover in time from a wrist injury that sidelined the young Brit for most of 2014.

Robson, who turns 21 in just over two weeks, had been hoping to make her comeback at Flinders Park in Melbourne when the first Grand Slam event of the season begins on January 19.

However, it now appears she will start her return from injury on the second-tier ITF circuit next month, while her first WTA Tour event is likely to be in Bogota in early April.

The former Wimbledon junior champion has not played since losing to Kirsten Flipkens in the first round of last year’s Australian Open and underwent surgery in April ruling her out of both the French Open and Wimbledon Championships –and subsequently the remainder of the season.

Her absence has meant her ranking has slipped from 27 to 916 which means she will have to depend on wildcards to compete in the bigger tournaments on the senior tour.

Robson has not won a competitive match on the WTA Tour since September 2013 and faces a long road back when she finally becomes injury free.
