Lukas Rosol saved two match points before beating Jerzy Janowicz in the final of the ATP Winston-Salem Open.
Rosol, the seventh seed, eventually prevailed 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 to secure his second ATP title and the top prize of $80,280.
The Czech had his back against the wall several times in the match, none more so than in the 10th game of the final set when Janowicz held two match points. Rosol saved the first with an overhead smash and the second with a backhand volley winner.
Seizing the momentum, he broke his Polish opponent in the very next game and then served out victory with an ace.
"It was a very tough match for me," Rosol said.
Janowicz, a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last year, was looking to become the first Polish winner of an ATP singles crown since Wojtek Fibak in 1982 and had earlier threatened to do that in straight sets.
After winning the opening set, he held three break points in the 11th game of the second but Rosol held his nerve.
Janowicz also had chances in the tie-break but, after taking an early advantage, Rosol won six of the last eight points to force a deciding set.
Rosol will leap to 27th in the revised world rankings and now has some great momentum going into the US Open - the year's final Grand Slam - which gets under way on Monday.
