Verdict

FIRE LILY came into this race on the back of a fine fourth in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and built on that effort with a ready win, made all the more impressive due to four horses all holding every chance with two furlongs to run. David Wachman's filly was stepping up in trip but she shrugged that aside and really responded well to pressure to go clear with 200 yards to run. She certainly wasn't stopping at the line, suggesting that she has more of her sire's influence than her very speedy mother, and it will be interesting to see where she heads to next, with a step up to Group One company not tilting at windmills. Second home was After who looked to be squeezed for home when the sprint started but she responded well to the whip and was doing her best work in the final 100 yards. She was far from disgraced on this significant step up in class. Stablemate Boris Grigoriev was sporting first-time blinkers and travelled as well as anything in the race. He was still in front with two furlongs to run but the response when asked to quicken wasn't immediate and in the end he could only plug on at the one pace. He was a couple of lengths in front of Ishvana who looks to have scope for further improvement, and she in turn was well clear from Fulbright who disappointed having attracted market support. Zip Top didn't get the best of runs, having been slowly away and having to make his challenge towards the outer was no help. Having said that his effort was very short-lived and very tame and he has something to prove after this run.
