Verdict

A remarkable and heartbreaking end (for Zenyatta's fans) to the Breeders' Cup and Zenyatta's unbeaten record with jockey Mike Smith, rightly or wrongly, coming in for plenty of criticism and the jockey broke down in emotional scenes during the press conference blaming himself for the defeat. Zenyatta, last year's Classic winner and unbeaten in 19 career starts, was dropped out in last as was customary but she was fully 30 lengths off the early pace set by a quartet of Quality Road, Espoir City, Haynesfield and First Dude and looking reluctant to race. The pace was fast but Mike Smith asked her to close on the main group as they straightened out into the back straight. The quartet in front maintained a strong gallop and were ignored by the majority of the field with Etched racing about six lengths adrift of them but a length in front of the chasing pack with Lookin At Lucky and Blame well placed in behind. The first group were still seven lengths clear at the four pole but with 3 furlongs to run Quality Road was already on the retreat and the field had bunched right up with Zenyatta still last about 15 lengths off the leader. Blame and Lookin At Lucky made their move with about three furlongs to go and went for the same gap on the outside of Haynesfield but on the inside of Etched with Blame giving no quarter on the inside of Lookin At Lucky and forcing his rival wide on the track. There wasn't a lot of room at the head of affairs on the inside whilst a the rear of the field Mike Smith had finally extricated Zenyatta from the rail and angled out once into the straight; she took a while to find her stride but gradually picked up under strong driving only to find that the wire came a stride or two too soon. She would undoubtedly have won if she'd been able to get into the open earlier but Mike Smith couldn't have gone around the bunching field on the final two turns so had to sit and suffer until the straight and it's hard to see what else he could have done from that position although some will argue that he should have made his move earlier in the back straight. Full credit has to go to Blame who was game when challenging between horses and who put daylight between himself and the chasing pack in the straight to confirm himself as a top class performer when getting strong fractions to chase. Lookin At Lucky had every chance but the effort of making his challenge took its toll on him and he had no more to offer from the furlong pole and was passed for third by the outsider Fly Down close home.
