CHIBERTA KING just held off Aaim To Prosper and Electrolyser to win this 12 months ago and may well have been targeted at the race again having only had one run, a third to subsequent Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Opinion Poll over C&D in May, so far this season. Askar Tau and Aaim To Prosper were behind that day and look held while York winner Cavalryman's suspect stamina will be put to the test on this stiff track. Neither Thimaar nor Bolivia look good enough but Mount Athos won a competitive handicap at Newmarket on his first start for Luca Cumani and there's a good chance he'll improve further. Glen's Diamond finished ahead of Electrolyser when second in the Yorkshire Cup in May but has been generally disappointing this year and again has his work cut out here trying 2m for the first time.
Cavalryman 9-4 (9-0) Steadied in rear, smooth headway over 2f out, led over 1f out, stayed on well, won at York 1m 6f Listed Stakes (4yo+) (1) gf in May beating Calico Cat (9-0) by 2l, 5 ran.
Electrolyser (IRE) 20-1 (9-0) Tracked leader, pushed along over 3f out, weakened inside final furlong, 5th of 8, 7l behind Red Cadeaux (9-0) at York 1m 6f Grp 2 (1) gd in May.
Aaim To Prosper (IRE) 16-1 (8-11) 4th of 8, 1 1/2l behind Inside Man (8-11) at Maisons-Laffitte(FR) 1m 7f Listed stks (1) sft in Jun.
Askar Tau (FR) 40-1 (9-2) Held up in last pair, headway on inside 2f out, plugged on to modest 5th inside final furlong, never involved, 5th of 9, 5l behind Colour Vision (9-0) at Royal Ascot 2m 4f Grp 1 (1) gs in Jun.
Chiberta King 25-1 (9-2) Led, ridden 3f out, headed just inside final furlong, lost 2nd post, 3rd of 10, 3l behind Opinion Poll (9-4) at Sandown 2m Grp 3 (1) gf in May.
Glen's Diamond 6-1 (9-1) Led, ridden and headed over 3f out, soon lost 2nd, lost 3rd and weakened over 2f out, eased over 1f out, tailed off, last of 4, 29l behind Brown Panther (9-1) at Pontefract 1m 4f Listed Stakes (4yo+) (1) sft in Jun.
Thimaar (USA) 5-2fav (8-12) Tracked leader 4f, stayed in close 3rd, switched left to outside 4f out, went 2nd 3f out, led approaching final 2f, headed inside final 2f, outpaced and no chance with leading duo final furlong, 3rd of 6, 11l behind Colour Vision (8-12) at Kempton 2m Group 3 (1) pol in May.
Mount Athos (IRE) 9-2fav (9-10) Held up, headway over 2f out, led over 1f out, ridden and ran on, won at Newmarket 1m 6f hcp 0-105 (2) gf in May beating Harlestone Times (9-5) by 2 1/4l, 12 ran.
