Smart Flat performer Debdebdeb opened her account over obstacles at Catterick

A review of the action from Catterick Bridge on Wednesday, where Debdebdeb jumped well to score for Donald McCain.

Smart Flat performer Debdebdeb opened her account over obstacles at the second time of asking in the racinguk.com Mares' Novices' Hurdle at Catterick.

Her last two runs on the level saw her take in the Park Hill Stakes and the Cesarewitch and while she failed to cut any ice at that sort of company, it shows the grade at which she was racing.

Debdebdeb was only beaten a length on her hurdling debut last month and was sent off the 5/2 second favourite to go one better.

The even-money favourite Mollasses was expected to blaze a trail, like she did when beating a smart sort at Plumpton, but when the tape drew back she shied away and was left 10 lengths before taking part and she never looked on good terms with herself.

With the confirmed front-runner out of the way, Wilson Renwick took the bull by the horns saw off the late run of Allez Encore by half a length.

"She was very keen at Newcastle so I ran her again quickly to try and teach her to settle," said McCain.

"She got a bit tired late on, but she was entitled to as she'd done a lot of running up to then.

"That was a very good race of its type. Normally anyone of the first three would expect to come here and be odds on.

"We know she's got plenty of ability. Andrew (Balding) recommended her to me so hopefully her owners have a lot of fun.

"One thing she does enjoy is jumping, she's very slick.

"I would think I'll look for another race like this with a penalty but we'll have a look at some nice mares' races towards the end of the season."

Veteran trainer Mick Easterby was in double form, with 6/4 favourite Classinaglass firstly denying Pistol Basc in the Dine And View At Catterick Races Handicap Chase.

He always looked in control under Harry Bannister but idled close home, giving Pistol Basc a sniff of a chance, but the line came too soon.

Stablemate Narcissist (11/2) later won the catterickbridge.co.uk Novices' Handicap Chase which rather fell apart, with the market leaders making plenty of mistakes.

Grand Vintage (8/1) earlier provided Cumbria trainer Ken Slack with a first success in the Go Racing In Yorkshire Handicap Hurdle with a length-and-a-half defeat of the fast-finishing Deny.
