Silvestre de Sousa is set to appeal a five-day ban handed out by the stewards at Lingfield on Thursday.

A stewards' report into an incident in the stalls before the Ladbrokes Handicap Stakes, in which De Sousa partnered the David Evans-trained Verse Of Love, said the rider "had appeared to repeatedly stamp on his horse's back in the starting stalls".

Having heard evidence from De Sousa and viewed recordings, the stewards found the rider in breach of Rule (B)54.2 and guilty of improper riding.

De Sousa's agent Gareth Owen said: "He rang me after the race and couldn't believe he got banned for it.

"Silvestre loves horses, the horse was trying to go under the stalls and Silvestre was trying to help keep him calm, to let him know he had company. I've known Silvestre a long time and he would not harm a horse.

"He would be crazy not to appeal."
