Stockport's Naomi Broady came close to causing a major upset in Quebec as she threatened to knock third seed Kristina Mladenovic out of the first round of the Court Banque Nationale.

The 2007 British Under-18 girls' champion reached the second round of Wimbledon this year and looks ready to make a big impression on the WTA Tour after running France's Mladenovic close at PEPS.

Broady, 24, was unlucky to lose the first set after firing four aces past her opponent and led 5-4 in the second before Mladenovic turned the screw and claimed a 6-4 7-5 victory.

The former world No 36 will play Sesil Karatantcheva in the next round.
