Home favourite Daniel Diaz took the overall lead of the Tour de San Luis in Argentina by climbing to a solo victory on stage two.
Diaz, who won the race in 2013, escaped from a select front group alongside Colombia’s Rodolfo Torres on the 4.8km ascent to the summit finish at Mirador de Portrero and then attacked again inside the final 500m to win by six seconds.
Brazil’s Kleber da Silva finished 24 seconds down in third, while 2014 race winner Nairo Quintana crossed the line 27 seconds back in seventh.
Diaz, who rides for Funvic Brasilinvest-San Jose dos Campos and is the reigning Argentinian road race champion, now leads Torres and Da Silva by the same margins in the general classification going into Wednesday’s rolling third stage from Concaran to Juana Koslay.
