Rickie Fowler was delgihted to be able to up his game ahead of next week's 144th Open at St Andrews and move in to contention at the Scottish Open.

Fowler, who last year became just the third player to place in the top five in the four majors in the same calendar year, carded a fine third round 66 as he continues to gain links practice prior to next week's visit to St Andrews.

The Players Championship winner carded one bogey, an eagle and three birdies in windy conditions, but saw another birdie attempt on the 18th catch the edge of the hole and spin out.

"The big key is preparation for next week," Fowler said. "Not just playing the week before but also playing on a links golf course and having the opportunity to be in contention, it's only going to help me for next week.

Rickie Fowler said he was pleased with a 'good solid round' despite tricky conditions at the Scottish Open.

"Last year I finished eighth here and then went on to have a good week at The Open. So I am looking forward to tomorrow and having a chance at winning this thing down the stretch and putting myself in a position to go play well next week as well."

Chasing St Andrews

Three players who finish in the top 10 at Gullane who aren't already exempt will secure places for next week's Open, with leader Daniel Brooks one of those in contention to book one of those qualification spots.

The 27-year-old, who had missed 13 cuts in succession before finishing joint 20th in France last week, recovered from an opening hole double bogey to close a third round 70 and take a one-shot lead over Raphael Jacquelin into the final round.

Daniel Brooks says winning the Scottish Open would be amazing but his priority is to just keep playing well and hold on to his tour card.

"It's good to get off to a bad start and hold it together," Brooks told Sky Sports 4. "It was playing tough and cold in the wind so it was nice to carry on the way I have been playing. I hit a lot of poor shots today but scrambled and putted well.

"It would be amazing to win, that's what we play for. It's the biggest day of my career but I am trying not to think about it. The main priority is to keep my card because I have been struggling all year."
