Ryan Moore carded a bogey-free 66 to take a one-shot lead after the third round of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.
Moore, who opened up with scores of 63 and 68, took his score to 13-under with a round that included an eagle at the par five sixth and birdies at 11 and 17.
That put him one in front of Aussie Aaron Baddeley and two clear of a four-man group which includes Spain's Sergio Garcia.
After five opening pars on the short par 70 at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut, Moore made his move by sinking a 38 foot putt for eagle at the sixth to leap to -11.
The 31-year-old, who is searching for a fourth PGA Tour win, posted the first of his two back-nine birdies by chipping in from off the green at the par three 11th and secured the outright overnight lead with another at 17 after a lovely approach to just four feet.
"Today was a great examples of 'It doesn't have to be pretty' to shoot a great golf score," Moore said. "I honestly didn't feel great all day hitting the ball, but drove it well enough to kind of keep myself out of trouble."
"This is a tournament I really want to win and I know it's a tournament I can win.”
Baddeley jumped to second place thanks to a five-under 65. He was out in 33 and then reeled off four birdies in six holes at the start of his back nine, with a bogey at 12 the only blemish on his card.
Garcia's 65 was also due to a back nine surge, birdies at 11, 13, 14 and 16 taking him home in just 31.
"It's been a solid season so far," Garcia said. "There's no question I'd like to have played better at the Masters and last week (at the US Open)."
The Ryder Cup star shares third place with Korean KJ Choi (69), overnight leader Scott Langley (70) and Michael Putnam (69).
Overnight leader Langley suffered a poor start to his round with bogeys on the fourth and fifth before a birdie on the sixth brought him back to one over total of 36 on his front nine.
The Illinois golfer had crept to the top of the leaderboard on Friday to lead by one shot after posting 65.
Kevin Streelman shot the round of the day, a six-under 64, to move into tied seventh alongside Nick Watney and Carl Pettersson.
As for the big-name Americans, Dustin Johnson carded a one-over 71 to finish six off the pace while Bubba Watson is down in tied 34th on four-under after a 67.
