Top seed Serena Williams reached the third round of the Italian Open with a 6-1 6-3 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

The world No 1 did endure a few moments of concern, despite the dominant scoreline, as she was broken once and saved four more break points before sealing victory in just over an hour.

Third seed Maria Sharapova also advanced in Rome when Jarmila Gajdosova retired with a shoulder injury while trailing 6-2 3-1.
