France beaten with a rubber to spare

Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych powered the Czech Republic to Hopman Cup glory on Saturday. The duo saw off the challenge of France's Marion Bartoli and Richard Gasquet to win the final with a rubber to spare. Kvitova completed an impressive week by posting her fourth straight singles win in Perth. The Wimbledon champion, regarded by many as the favourite for the forthcoming Australian Open, beat Bartoli 7-5 6-1 in the opening rubber to get the Czechs off to a strong start. Bartoli led 5-3 in the first set but failed to serve out and won just one more game. Berdych then had the chance to clinch the trophy and he did not disappoint, beating Gasquet 7-6 (7/0) 6-4. The Frenchman, who has shown improved form throughout the week, fell apart in the first-set tie-break and that proved costly in the final analysis.

Great week

Berdych, who also won all four of his singles matches during the event, said: "It couldn't be better, it was an extremely great week and first of all I need to congratulate my partner. "I think it was possibly the best final that could come of those two groups and we are happy for that. We would like to congratulate them (France) as well to get the final and wish them both the best of luck for the rest of the season." A delighted Kvitova was also understandably happy with her start to the new season. She said: "It's really good to win at the beginning of the season and of course I have to say thank you to Tomas because without him we wouldn't win." It was the Czech Reublic's second success at the event, Jana Novotna and Petr Korda having teamed up to win it in 1994.
